"Towards Knowledge Democracy”

De RMNO organiseert, in samenwerking met Vide en andere organisaties, van 25 t/m 27 augustus 2009 de internationale conferentie Towards Knowledge Democracy. Locatie: Hooglandse kerk en Juridische Faculteit van de Universiteit Leiden.

Theme 4: Media, Politics and Knowledge Flow

Session 4.5: Citizens in Charge – Participation in inspecting and monitoring
(Introduction and the Dutch experiences)

Cohosted by: VIDE (Netherlands Association for monitoring, assessment and inspecting)

The Internet has created possibilities for citizens and civil society organisations to contribute to government activities concerning evaluation, monitoring, inspecting and maintaining government policies and regulation. Prof. Valerie Frissen will introduce the issue by presenting examples of initiatives by citizens and by public authorities, and pointing at some important challenges.

Different speakers will present examples from Dutch experiences. Like in aviation (real time noise measurement by citizens), the Amber Alert procedure for finding missing children, and a website on which parents and pupils can evaluate teachers. The presentations will be discussed.

This session will be chaired by: prof. Valerie Frissen

In the second part of the session different speakers will present examples from international experiences. The second part of the session will focus on the role of civil society in inspecting and monitoring. The participants will discuss the opportunities and threats with the speakers of the first and second part of the session.

Column: Ars puniendi oftewel de kunst van het straffen

De winter ligt al een tijdje achter ons, de zomer voor ons. Tijd voor reflectie op dat ene moment van de winterspelen, dat voor handhavers en toezichthouders interessant is. U raadt het al, Sven Kramer. Niet alleen sportliefhebbers hebben van deze spelen genoten, ook psychologen hebben hun hart op kunnen halen aan de vergissing van Kramer doordat hij binnenbocht nam en niet een buitenbocht.
